An unhealthy work-life balance and extended hours of Work From Home causing dryness and digital eye strain? Here’s a small read about its prevention and care.

The invention of Computers has undeniably benefited us, in our workplace as well as for personal work. In the last 25 years, advancement in technology has made life simpler and easier in almost every aspect. Computers have revolutionized a lot, but it sure does have a lot of harmful health effects as well. There has been a rise in musculoskeletal related issues such as numbing and tingling of fingers, backache, cervical stiffness are some of the commonly reported issues associated with the usage of prolonged computer hours.

What is Computer Vision Syndrome?

Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) is nothing but the harmful eye issues and effects that arise due to the strain caused by using the computer screen for longer periods of time. Any person who has spent some hours in front of the screen has at least experienced some of the symptoms that are caused due to CVS.

The discomfort and strain caused to the eyes can further show up in different ways.

Symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS)

The symptoms of CVS can differ from one person to the other. Some of the common symptoms are:

  • Dry eyes
  • Strain on the eyes
  • Neck stiffness and pain
  • Blurred Vision
  • Headache
  • Burning Sensation
  • High light sensitivity
  • Eye Irritation
  • Double Vision
  • Backaches
  • Difficulty in focusing
  • Shoulder Pain
  • Motion Sickness/Dizziness
  • Redness of eyes

What are the causes of CVS?

Some of the major causes that affect your eyes and can lead you to experience symptoms of CVS. Digital screens can cause a great amount of strain on a person’s eyes and the main reasons for this can be:

  • The screen content being less sharp or focused
  • Reflections or glare on the screen
  • Viewing the screen in dark settings (darkroom) or low light conditions
  • Holding the device/screen too close to your eyes
  • The angle at which you hold the screen
  • Not taking enough screen time breaks
  • Poor sitting postures

Preventive measures:

  • Try to keep your screen light at low brightness levels.
  • Try to take short breaks while using screens. Preferably take a 20 seconds break after every 20mins.
  • Blink your eyes more often in order to prevent them from getting sore or dry.
  • Using appropriate positions while using a screen. Improper positioning of a desk or chair can lead to shoulder and backaches.
  • Avoid staring at your phone devices while lying down as this can also cause minor issues in your vision.
  • If you already have some power in your eyes, then you are more likely to suffer from this syndrome.
  • Try to avoid screen use 1-2 hours before going to bed and after waking up.

How is CVS Diagnosed?

In order to get a proper understanding of your symptoms and effects, your eye doctor might conduct a few tests like:

Patient History: This is done to have knowledge about your screen usage, past experience, genetics, and any underlying issues that might be causing the problems.

Eye Examination: Eye examination tests are done to check if you have power in your eyes. The nearsightedness and farsightedness of your vision can also be one of the reasons for the symptoms.

Refractive Errors test: Refractive error tests are done to examine the shape of your eyes. If it does not let the light bend in properly, it might cause some issues in the image formation and cause you to see blurred images.

Visual Acuity Test: Visual Acuity tests are done to examine how well your eye can focus on the details and shapes of the images you see. It refers to the sharpness of the vision. This is one of the factors that help examine your vision.

Risks if it goes untreated:

Most symptoms are temporary and go away on their own. However, you have to be careful while taking care of your eyes. If these issues and symptoms remain consistent, they may further lead to severe problems and can reduce your visual acuity.

It can lead to issues like Poor Sleep and Insomnia which can cause a great hindrance in your daily life. It is advised to not use the screen at least 1-2 hours before going to bed. The blue light emitted from these screens can cause a strong sense of wakefulness in the neurons and your brain activity goes up, which reduces your ability to fall asleep. About 55% of people use their screens within an hour of waking up, which causes a greater amount of strain on the eyes.

The first and foremost step should be to follow all the preventive measures mentioned. However, if there is some underlying issue that stays consistent and is causing difficulty, some of the potential treatment options are:

1.        Regular Eye Checkup:

Frequent visits to a doctor can help you reduce your risk of CVS. Prolonged screen time can worsen your symptoms and can also lead to severe issues. People who already have Vision issues or wear glasses or contact lenses must be more careful and should follow up with the doctor as you might be using outdated glasses (power)

2.        Laser Eye Surgery:

Some people experience these symptoms due to underlying issues and might want to go for laser surgery. This surgery helps to reshape the surface of your eyes so that it can focus more effectively.

3.        Vision Therapy:

The main purpose of vision therapy treatment is to improve a person’s focus or vision. This is mainly achieved with the help of eye exercises that are done to strengthen eye muscles and movement of eyes. Vision therapy is suggested for people who face issues despite wearing glasses or contact lenses.
